Running an agency can be a lot like training a dog. You need patience. You need trust. And sometimes, you need to throw the occasional treat their way.
Here are a few things my dog has taught me about building great client relationships:
1. Consistency Builds Trust
Dogs do not trust someone who shows up once and disappears. Neither do clients. When we show up consistently with updates, reports, and real communication, relationships get stronger.
2. Treats Matter
Little surprises go a long way. A quick “congrats” text when a client hits a milestone, a small gift, an unprompted win report — these moments add up.
(Also, actual treats are not a bad idea. Just saying.)
3. Clear Communication Matters
If you give a dog mixed signals, they get confused. Clients are no different. Set expectations. Be clear on process. Say “here’s what happens next.” Everyone is happier.
4. Trust Is Earned and Re-earned
One bad experience can shake a relationship. A dog never forgets a bad encounter and neither do clients. That is why we own mistakes, communicate clearly, and rebuild trust fast.
5. People Want to Feel Seen
If I ignore my dog, he lets me know, loudly. Clients want the same thing: to know we are paying attention, that we are invested, and that their success matters.
Bottom Line
Treat your clients like you would treat a good dog:
- Show up consistently
- Communicate clearly
- Reward loyalty
- Rebuild trust fast
- Make them feel seen
(And yes, there are regularly dogs in our office. )
